TLSC Labor Day Tournament Weekend

I wanted to personally congratulate those Longhorns teams’ that participated in a Labor Day Tournament.  We had a very successful weekend as a club.  We had a handful of teams actually off or participating in the Premier League over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Of the 11 club teams that participated in a tournament over Labor Day:

  • 9 teams made it to atleast the Quarterfinals
  • 8 teams made it to atleast the Semifinals
  • 6 teams made it to atleast the Finals (championship game)
  • 3 teams won a tournament championship!

What a great way to kick-off League play for the TLSC Family.  Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to a successful year.

Best Wishes & GO HORNS!

Baylor University Medical Center
Injury Prevention Program

Baylor University Medical Center is launching an injury prevention program this summer.  The purpose of this program is to decrease the risk of injury during athletic participation by educating athletes, coaches, and parents on prevention techniques.  The initial offering of the program will focus on prevention of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in soccer players.  Baylor SportsCare™ will work with the Texas Longhorns Soccer Club initially and expand the program to other organizations/teams in the future.

It is estimated that in the over 100,000 individuals per year sustain non-contact ACL injuries, most of whom are young, healthy individuals.   Research has concluded that females have a 4-6 times more likely to have an injury to the ACL than males, affecting 1 out of every 100 high school female athletes.  ACL injuries come at a great cost in both time and money.  An ACL injury costs approximately $17,000 and recovery time of 6-12 months with extensive physical therapy.  Even with rehabilitation there is an increased risk of osteoarthritis in the future, possibly requiring knee replacement.

Because of the high incidence of injuries to athletes’ anterior cruciate ligament, surgeons, scientists, therapists, and athletic trainers are dedicated to attain greater knowledge about prevention of ACL injuries and to disseminate that information to the community. Recent injury prevention programs have been promising in reducing incidence of this injury.  These programs incorporate components of flexibility, strength, plyometric exercises, balance, and agility.  One study concluded that implementing an ACL injury prevention program over a one year period can reduce ACL injuries up to 88%.

Most athletes, parents, and coaches do not realize the injury prevalence, costs, and prevention potential until it is too late.  Please contact Baylor SportsCare™ for more information 1-800-4-BAYLOR (422-9567).  Helping athletes avoid ACL injuries is Baylor’s way of giving your team a healthy advantage!
